Get Winter Ready Now — So You Can Actually Enjoy It Later 🍂🕯️

There’s something about this time of year that makes me want to slow everything down.

The evenings are beginning to feel a little cooler, the light is changing, and although we might not quite be ready to admit that summer is coming to an end, autumn is definitely on its way.

And do you know what?

I think it’s time to embrace it.

Rather than waiting until the first freezing morning, the rain is hammering against the windows and Christmas is suddenly around the corner, now is the perfect time to start getting your home, your garden, your car and even your freezer ready for the colder months.

Because my theory is simple:

Be proactive while the sun is still shining, so that when winter arrives, you can relax.

Put the summer clothes away

One of my favourite things about the changing seasons is changing the wardrobes.

Pack away those summer dresses, shorts and sandals and bring out the cosy jumpers, joggers, slippers and clothes you actually want to curl up in.

And while you’re doing it, have a really good declutter.

If you haven’t worn something all summer, ask yourself why.

Does it still fit? Do you still like it? Would you actually buy it again?

If the answer is no, let it go. Sell it on Vinted, buy something you will wear!

Doing this now means you’re not trying to sort through wardrobes when it’s freezing cold and you’ve got a million other things to think about.

Declutter your home before you hibernate

Autumn is the perfect time for a proper little home reset.

Clear out the cupboards, sort the drawers, tackle that pile you’ve been ignoring and get rid of things you no longer need.

The aim isn’t to have a perfectly organised show home.

It’s about making your home feel easy to live in.

Because once the colder months arrive, I don’t want to spend every weekend cleaning, sorting and catching up.

I want to be under a blanket watching my favourite film.

And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that!

Do the hard work while the weather is still reasonably kind, so you can enjoy the slower months without constantly thinking about everything you should be doing.

Get that freezer ready!

This one is a game changer for busy families.

Before winter really kicks in, clear out your freezer.

Use up those random bags of frozen food that have been hiding at the back since who knows when, give it a good clean and start again.

Then fill it with things you know you’ll actually use.

Sausages.
Beef.
Diced chicken.
Frozen vegetables.
Whatever your family loves.

Having a freezer full of ingredients for winter warmers means that on a cold morning when you’re rushing off to work, you can throw something into the slow cooker, switch it on and forget about dinner.

You don’t have to spend your whole working day thinking:

“What on earth am I going to cook tonight?”

You already know.

And there is something incredibly satisfying about coming home to the smell of dinner cooking when it’s cold and dark outside.

If you have a fire, get your wood ready

If you’re lucky enough to have an open fire or wood burner, don’t leave everything until the last minute.

Get your wood cut, stacked and ready now.

There is nothing worse than trying to sort firewood when it’s absolutely freezing and raining sideways!

Future you will be very grateful.

Get the garden ready for winter

The garden might not be the first thing you think about when preparing for winter, but doing a little now can make such a difference.

Clear away the summer clutter.

Pack away garden furniture, toys and anything that could be damaged by the weather. Give the shed a good sort out and make sure everything has a home.

Do the last little tidy-up while you’re still happy to be outside.

Then when the weather turns, you can look out of the window at your garden without thinking:

“Oh God, I really need to sort that out right this minute” nobody wants to be running round a wet garden trying to chuck everything in the shed, you won’t like your future sled for this when the times comes to getting it all back out!

And yes… we’ve already put the Christmas fairy lights up!

I know. I know.

It’s September.

But hear me out…

We’ve already put our fairy lights around the house ready to switch on in December.

Why?

Because I refuse to be standing outside in November, freezing my arse off, trying to attach Christmas lights!

All the hooks are already safely attached around the porch ready for our wreaths and garlands too.

So when December arrives, I’ll be able to make everything inside, probably with a glass of red wine, and then simply attach it.

Much quicker.

Much warmer.

Much less swearing!

Being organised doesn’t have to mean doing everything early.

Sometimes it simply means making things easier for yourself later.

Make your home cosy

Now is also the time to start thinking about how you want your home to feel.

Bring out the extra cushions and throws.

Layer up the beds.

Make the sofa somewhere you genuinely want to curl up.

There are some lovely winter bedding options around at the moment, and I’ve seen some really good-value ones in The Range that won’t cost you a fortune.

You don’t need to completely redecorate your house every season.

Sometimes changing the bedding, adding a few cushions, a chunky throw and some warm lighting is enough to make a room feel completely different.

Get the candles out

I absolutely love candles at this time of year.

There is something so simple about coming home when it’s dark outside, putting the lights on, lighting a candle, making a hot chocolate and getting under a blanket.

Suddenly the fact that it’s cold and dark doesn’t seem quite so bad.

In fact, it feels rather lovely.

Don’t forget your car

And finally — get your car winter ready now.

Clear out all the rubbish that’s accumulated over the summer.

Yes, I’m talking about that random towel, the swimming things, the armband and whatever else has somehow made its permanent home in your boot!

Then put a couple of blankets or throws in there.

Make sure you have what you need if you were to break down or get stuck somewhere in cold weather.

Winter driving can be unpredictable, so being prepared is always better than wishing you had been.

It’s time to start winding down

I think we put so much pressure on ourselves to constantly be doing.

There’s always another cupboard to clean, another load of washing, another job in the garden, another thing on the to-do list.

But winter doesn’t have to be about catching up on everything you didn’t manage to do.

It’s about slowing down.

So be proactive now.

Get the decluttering done.

Sort the wardrobes.

Prepare the freezer.

Tidy the garden.

Get the wood ready.

Put the blankets on the sofa.

Make your home feel warm and cosy.

Get your car prepared.

And then, when the colder months arrive, give yourself permission to hibernate a little.

Put on your comfiest clothes.

Light the candles.

Make the hot chocolate……
Or Bailey’s, or red wine!

Get under the biggest blanket you own.

Put on your favourite film.

And enjoy your home.

Because sometimes being organised isn’t about doing more.

It’s about doing a little now so that you can do a lot less later.

And honestly?

I think that’s exactly what autumn and winter should be about. 🍂🤎🕯️
